Lysine is needed for appropriate growth (muscle, blood and hoof building) and bone development; it helps calcium absorption and maintains proper nitrogen balance. This amino acid aids in the production of antibodies, hormones and enzymes, and helps in collagen formation and tissue repair. Deficiency can result in anemia, inability to concentrate, irritability, lack of energy and retarded growth. Lysine is most often deficient in horse diets. Supplementation is highly recommended for yearlings at moderate growth levels, training horses and performance horses.
